PERFECT POWER: How the Microgrid Revolution Will Unleash Cleaner, Greener, More Abundant Energy

Solar: A 4 kW system gives ~60 miles of driving a Tesla or Leaf per day assuming a conservative 6 hrs of sunlight. That’s 16 panels, each about 5×3 feet. This even includes the additional loss of generating during the day and using the grid as your battery and then buying the electricity back at night to charge the car.

I guess what I’m trying to say, Drew, is that you don’t need a huge solar farm.

It’s not all roses, of course. You could do better for the “environment” by moving into an apartment building instead of living in a house big enough to support a 4kW system, you could live closer to work and take public transportation, not use A/C during the summer, not eat meat. But, c’mon that would suck. What’s the point of getting rich if you have to still live like the poor. (This is not sarcasm, being totally honest here).
